Cincinnati Public Schools has a long and successful history of establishing public Montessori Schools. The dedicated teachers at Pleasant Ridge Elementary are fully trained in the Montessori Method. The classes are grouped by ages: 3-6, 6-9, and 9-12.

Below is an excerpt from:  30 Questions, 30 Answers – a Montessori Education Reference Guide by Connie S. Redwine, M.Ed. that explains more about the Montessori philosophy:

The Montessori Method is comprised of three main principles:  (1) preparation of the environment, (2) observation of the child and (3) freedom within limits.

First, a Montessori classroom has furnishings appropriate for the size of children using them.  The materials are beautifully made, designed to attract children. They are on open, accessible shelves around the room. They are used in a specific sequence and are self-correcting. The Montessori classroom is inviting, interesting, calm and orderly.

Second, Montessori teachers are trained to understand the stages of child development.  Each child is guided through the curriculum based on the teacher’s observations of the child’s cognitive, physical and psychological needs.  Montessori teachers are trained to educate the “whole child.”  Learning includes not only academics but also considers social and emotional development and physical coordination (large and fine motor skills).

Third, the Montessori Method allows for movement, choice and socialization.  Within this freedom are rules governed by respect for the environment, respect for others and respect for self.
